KU Leuven | The long-standing vacancy as successor to Prof. Guido Aerts at the Ghent Technology Campus of KU Leuven, Belgium, has now been filled. After the tragic passing away of the initially appointed successor Prof. Koen Goiris, Florian Weiland was appointed on 1 October 2019.

Obituary | Heinrich Joh. Barth, for many years a managing partner of Joh. Barth & Sohn, died on December 10, 2019 at the age of 93.

Obituary | Prof. Gabriela Basařová, DrSc, MSc, died on 16 October 2019 after a tragic traffic accident. Prof. Basařová was born on 17 January 1934 in Pilsen to a family of teachers.

Personal commitment pays off

Professional exchange | Johann Angres, Managing Director of Steinfurth Messsysteme in Essen, Germany, received a great honor in April of 2019. He is the first German ever to be elected to the board of the ISBT. Never heard of the ISBT? The International Society of Beverage Technologists is the MEBAK or EBC of the soft drink industry. And because we also were not familiar with the ISBT, we decided to visit Johann Angres in Bochum to find out more about the association, his appointment to the board and the changes currently taking place at his company.

30 years of expericence | At the Supervisory Board meeting of 25 September 2019, Norbert Broger was appointed Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of Krones AG with effect from 1 January 2020.

Campden BRI | Derek Orford has 36 years in the industry, during which he qualified as a master brewer in 1991 while at Whitbread. He then went to work for Heineken in several international postings before joining Lion, in Australia. More recently he has provided consultancy services to craft brewers, including technical leadership for the rapid growth of Toast Ale.

BrewingScience | Dr. Scott Lafontaine is currently exploring the chemical and sensorial drivers of American consumer preference towards beer and wine as a postdoctoral scholar in Dr. Hildegarde Heymann’s laboratory at the University of California, Davis in the Department of Viticulture and Enology.

SACMI Group | Since 1st of June, Giulio Mengoli has been the new General Manager of the SACMI Group. His appointment was made official by the Board of Directors of the parent company, SACMI Imola.

USA | Glen Patrick Fox, a senior research fellow at Australia’s University of Queensland, on 1 July 2019, became UC Davis’ new Anheuser-Busch Endowed Professor of Malting and Brewing Science. Dr Fox succeeds Charlie Bamforth, who held the position from 1999 until his retirement last year.

The global producer of alcoholic beverages is making changes to its leadership within central Europe as Chris Stagg, currently Cluster Director for Central Europe operations, will return to the United Kingdom effective 1st August 2019 and assume a new role within the company.

It was with deep sadness that the brewing community learnt of the passing of Warren Quilliam on the 6th May 2019. Warren was well known and respected in global brewing circles and will be missed by many friends around the world.

Dr. Rudolf Michel was elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees at the Doemens Academy in February 2019.
