Obituary | Prof. Ludwig Narziß passed away on 29 November 2022 at the age of 97 after a short serious illness. After his apprenticeship and studies in Weihenstephan, Prof. Narziß worked at the Löwenbrauerei Munich from 1956 before returning to the TU Munich.
BarthHaas Grants | Hop specialist BarthHaas has announced the research prize winners of its BarthHaas Grants 2022. One grant goes to the scientists Natalia Svedlund and Dr. Frederico Magalhães of the Department of Brewing and Beverage Technology at Technische Universität Berlin, while another has been awarded to support the project run by Dr. Mathias Hutzler, Dr. Hubertus Schneiderbanger and Dr. Martin Zarnkow of the Research Center Weihenstephan for Brewing and Food Quality at the Technical University of Munich.
New Chairperson | The East Lothian family business PureMalt Products Ltd has appointed a new non-executive Chairperson to lead their Board of Directors. The company founder Bruce Turner MBE has served as the Chairman for fifty years. Mr Turner who is a well-known member of the Haddington and East Lothian business community will hand on the baton to Mark McDavid.
Staff news | Alexander Lenz has taken on the newly created position of Head of Sales Key Account Management at Ziemann Holvrieka. In this role, Alexander Lenz is the main contact for international key customers from the brewing, beverage and liquid food industry.
New representatives | The Brewers Association, the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American brewers, announced its 2022 board of directors, with five new representatives to the 21-person board.
Supporting diversity | In January 2022, Mariana da Silva Schneider, a brewer at Amager Bryghus (Brewery) in Denmark, was selected as the winner of the UC Davis “Pour it Forward” scholarship. The crowdfunded scholarship, designed to support diversity, leadership and cross-cultural understanding in the brewing industry, provides full enrollment into the prestigious online UC Davis Master Brewers Certificate Program. Schneider was selected from 31 applicants for the first annual Pour it Forward award.

Developers want feedback | On October 1, 2020, Dr. Mark Schneeberger assumed leadership of Application Development Beverage & Beer at GEA in Kitzingen, Germany. He succeeded Dr. Rudolf Michel, who went into well-deserved retirement at the end of March 2021. BRAUWELT interviewed Dr. Schneeberger about his new position, one year on.
Management changes | At the end of 2021, BarthHaas completed the final step in the transition from an owner-managed to an owner-controlled company, which will see the Barth family moving onto a supervisory board and the appointment of two new managing directors. Oliver Bergner and Peter Hintermeier, both long-serving members of the management team, will take over as managing directors of BarthHaas GmbH & Co. KG.
The Brewers Association (BA), the not-for-profit trade association dedicated to small and independent American craft brewers, hired Julia Herz as the executive director of the American Homebrewers Association® (AHA), the BA’s homebrewing division. She started her new job on December 1.
