Behind the Scenes of the European Beer Star

The “Oscars” for Beer | The European Beer Star is considered to be one of the most successful and established beer competitions of its kind. Since its inception, the number of breweries entering beer has been growing steadily along with the number of style categories. To manage such an event, the organization has to be well thought out. After all, all of the beers in the competition must not only arrive in the best possible condition, they must also be coded so that the members of the tasting panel do not know who brewed them. How does it work? We visited Doemens Academy in Gräfelfing, Germany, to have a look behind the scenes at the preparations leading up to the European Beer Star.

A growing community | It has the atmosphere of a family gathering: when, under the mantle of the KU Leuven, Technology Campus in Ghent, Belgium, the TU Berlin, the University of Nottingham, Oregon State University and the Italian Brewing Research Center CERB send out an invitation to the Trends in Brewing, everyone comes. This was certainly the case at this year’s 13th conference held from April 8th through 12th 2018.

In 2018, the annual Craft Brewers Conference took place in Nashville, USA

CBC 2018 | One simply cannot overlook 14 000 brewers and beer enthusiasts when they come to town – even in a bustling US city like Nashville, Tennessee. The city is not known for its lullabies or quiet bashfulness, but rather for the celebrated artists of that great American genre of music known as “country”. The dynamic atmosphere of the music scene is omnipresent in downtown Nashville, where the honky-tonk tones of country melodies can be heard drifting out of the numerous bars and dance halls. It is readily apparent when wandering the streets there why Nashville’s nickname is Music City.

The 35th IBD Asia Pacific Convention was held in Wellington, New Zealand, from 19th to 23rd of March 2018 and exceeded all expectations. So much of what happened in the technical sessions really embraced the conference theme – “Explore the Past to Discover Our Future”.

Attendees had the opportunity to participate in tastings of craft beer from Italian breweries

Craft Beer Italy | The newest member of the Beviale Family, Craft Beer Italy, held its first conference and exhibition in Milan, Italy, on November 22nd and 23rd of 2017.

Annual platform | Copa Cervezas de América is a beer event with a strong international reach that takes place in Chile. Here, passion and education come together in a competition, a conference, and a supply expo that act as an annual platform for people in the industry to come together and encourage the exchange of knowledge and ideas among outstanding leaders in the international beer scene. Every year, these titans of the industry come and contribute to the growing Latin American beer culture.

The Brewers Association has declared the thirteenth American Craft Beer Week (ACBW). From May 14 to May 20, craft brewers and beer enthusiasts will once again come together to explore the world of small and independent craft breweries. All 50 states will be holding exclusive brewery tours, special beer releases, beer and food pairings, tap takeovers and more to celebrate the ever-advancing beer culture in the U.S. For more information visit craftbeer.

The first ever drink technology India (dti) in New Delhi got off to: the regional spin-off of the leading trade fair for the Indian beverage, dairy and liquid food industry, together with the partner events of Messe Düsseldorf, occupied 11 000 m2 of floor space at the Pragati Maidan exhibition center in New Delhi during its debut event. Dr. Reinhard Pfeiffer, Deputy CEO of Messe München, was impressed with the successful inaugural event: “We’re thrilled that the premiere here in New Delhi was so popular with our exhibitors and visitors. The results highlight the enormous potential of the Indian beverage industry. By alternating between different regions of India and introducing the new annual format we have created the perfect conditions to be able to serve the entire Indian beverage, dairy and liquid food industry.”

Crafting Spirits | The fifth consecutive Craft Distilling Expo took place in London on October 4th and 5th 2017. This singular event offers a diverse program of informative and educational sessions and workshops organized around a trade show. The Old Truman Brewery on Brick Lane in the now fashionable East End serves as a splendid backdrop for the event.

The winners of the 2017 Ludwig Naziß Award were also announced at the drinktec (f. l.): laudator L. Narziß with T. Kunz, P. C. Wietstock, and F.-J. Methner

Great success | The whirlwind of activity surrounding drinktec 2017 has passed. Organizers, exhibitors and visitors can now take a deep breath and relax, confident in the knowledge that the trade fair was a resounding success. It was certainly a trade fair full of superlatives: the largest, most diverse and most comprehensive thus far. This year’s drinktec took place at the Neue Messe München exhibition center from September 11th to 15th 2017, and much of it was new.
