On this occasion, The Brewers of Europe published the 2014 European Beer Statistics, which reveal a brewing sector that continues to show signs of recovery, but still faces constraints to growth and investment.

With double-digit sales gains and an expanding consumer base, craft beers are popping up everywhere. Supermarkets, big-box chains and convenience stores are giving more shelf space and attention to the category. But how much more space can craft beer get? Behind the scenes there is already a tug-of-war between the Big Brewers defending their territory and the small brewers trying to shoulder in.

In modern quality assurance all three measuring systems are relevant: In-line, at-line and laboratory. They are chosen depending on the individual requirements of the company. In the brewing and beverage industries, in-line measurement is becoming increasingly important, due to an increased process reliability with reduced expenses or increased process transparency. Still, there will always be a need for lab and at-line measurement.

With almost 2800 craft breweries operating in 2013, up 15 percent over 2012, and perhaps 1700 more in various stages of planning, you’d have to be a real old miser to warn that this kind of growth cannot be sustainable. When Kim Jordan, the owner of New Belgium Brewery, predicted back in 2003 that craft beer will eventually garner 10 percent of the market – it had 3 percent then – Bob Weinberg, the eminent beer industry sage, retorted: “Not possible”. He obviously got it wrong.

Finland has been a beer country since ancient times. Kalevala, the Finnish national epic, describes the origin of beer in overwhelmingly more lines and words than the origin of the universe. From the middle ages, Finland as part of Sweden has been renowned for brewing skills in the whole kingdom. The importance of beer lasted until the Prohibition, when it became an alcohol issue. Craft and home brewing was best preserved in the traditional strong and sweet festivity brew called Sahti, which was about to become extinct due to the strict alcohol policy and “bureaucrazy” in Finland. The attempts to save and preserve Sahti play a pivotal role in the rebirth of craft brewing in Finland.
