The first Technical/Technological Brewing Seminar 2007, organized by Weihenstephan and Brauwelt was held in 2007 in Tokyo. The topic of malt milling systems was discussed in depth by Priv. Doz. Dr.-Ing. habil. Martin Krottenthaler.

Yeast and fermentation were among the keynote topics at the 31st International Congress of the European Brewery Convention in Venice/Italy. A major theme related to achieving an improved reproducibility in fermentation processes. Other papers addressed the distribution of yeast cells in a tank, issues of yeast flocculation and also contamination by wild yeasts.

On the 1st January 2008, a new chapter in the history of the European Brewery Convention (EBC) began. For decades EBC had its seat in Zoeterwoude in Holland and now, since that date, the organisation can be found together with the Brewers of Europe under one roof. Likewise there has been a change in the personnel structure of EBC: Marjolein van Wijngaarden and her team have entered their well-deserved retirement. Her successor is John M. Brauer who will be responsible for EBC’s fate in future. Brauwelt International has secured an exclusive interview where he is outlining his aspirations and expectations, as well as his plans for the ‘new’ EBC.

Evaporation can take place either by heating or by flashing wort. The validity of the equations shown in Part 1 is to be verified here by determining concentration reductions in components in industrial-scale operations. Contrary to the claims of some equipment manufacturers, the surface area available to wort during boiling has no influence on required overall evaporation. This is to be verified and confirmed in this Part 2 through measurements of component reductions.

The 1st Technical/Technological Conference for executives of the 4 leading Japanese breweries was held in Tokyo from 13th to 14th of march, 2007.
