Rüdiger Ruoss, the organiser, succeeded in bringing together top managers from the world’s largest brewing groups for the panel discussion at the 4th World Beer & Drinks Forum 2005. As Dieter Ammer, CEO, Tchibo Holdings AG who acted as moderator stated, they represented over 50% of the world beer market. The World Beer Forum in 1997, when the market leaders from five continents came together, was regarded as a historical sector event. 2005 will be referred to in future as a mega-event that will not be very easy to top. Indeed for four hours, Munich was the world beer capital. Much has happened since 1997. One only has to think of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the demise of the Eastern Block as well as developments in the Far East, such as e.g. in China and India. Some processes are still ongoing. Companies and even whole sectors go through life cycles. The important thing here is to adapt in time.

In December 2005, Coopers’ shareholders voted overwhelmingly to remove Lion Nathan’s pre-emptive right to buy shares in the company, thus effectively barring Lion Nathan from its door. Nevertheless, Lion Nathan has announced since that it would extend its AUD 420 million (USD 317 million) hostile takeover offer for Coopers Brewery until 20 March 2006.

In autumn 2003, Meura, a mechanical engineering company rich in tradition, moved to new premises in Péruwelz in West Belgium, near the French border. "Brauwelt" took the opportunity of speaking to Michel Genart, Managing Director, about the commercial development of the company, about its technical-technological business plan and the very wide range of equipment that Meura offers to the brewing sector.

The history of Meura stretches back to 1845, the year Jean Baptiste Meura founded the company in Tournai, Belgium. His son, Philippe Meura Sen. (1850 - 1921) introduced the first mash filter that he developed in 1901. This had advantages in terms of speed and yield compared to lauter tuns. By 1946, the company had over 600 in staff. ...

From October 13th to 16th, the 30th International Medical Advisory Group (IMAG) conference was held in Brussels. At the event which was attended mainly by medical doctors and nutritionists from 19 countries, new findings about alcohol and health were presented and discussed. Medical advisors to the brewing sector in Australia, Great Britain, Canada, New Zealand and the US exchanged views at this non-public forum.

The British Beer and Pub Association organised the event in Brussels for the first time. Sponsorship came from large European brewing groups such as Heineken, Scottish & Newcastle, and Interbrew. Representatives of some of the brewing majors and brewing associations were in the audience together with researchers and scientists.
