Filtration of caustic solution on bottle washing machines

In a university degree thesis prepared at the Technical University of Cologne, the effect of purifying caustic solution using microfiltration, ultrafiltration and nanofiltration was investigated and comparatively assessed based on objective criteria. This paper summarises the results.

Filtration of caustic solutions on bottle washers has been a very controversial subject for some time. Proponents claim an improvement in washing function of caustic, possibly together with an extension of life cycle, as well as savings on caustic additives and anti-foaming agents resulting from the fact that the caustic is generally cleaner. Subjective observations are advanced to support these statements, e.g. Josef Früh, Cologne/Germany. Table 1 provides the main data on the modules.
