BrewingScience goes open access

Nuremberg | After months of intensive preparations, the time has now come: Specialist publisher Hans Carl, Nuremberg, has switched its scientific journal BrewingScience to open access on 1 August 2025.

In the 77 years since BrewingScience and its predecessors Brauwissenschaft and Monatsschrift für Brauwissenschaft were founded in 1948, the academic landscape has changed significantly. Today, members of universities and other research institutions expect free access to scientific information.

We have taken this as an opportunity for a fundamental revision. BrewingScience as a subscription journal is now a thing of the past: As of 1 August, free access to BrewingScience publications will be available to all interested parties. In addition, an optional free newsletter will inform you every two months about new BrewingScience publications from the brewing, beverage and hop industries.

Register once – and off you go

In the course of the changeover to open access, the website has been technically and visually modernized – but the address www.brewingscience.de remains unchanged.

The new platform is based on the open source software OJS (open journal systems). After a one-time registration on the website, you can read the current original papers, as well as all BrewingScience articles published since 1999 under the menu item “Archive”. In addition, abstracts of other recent publications of interest to brewing scientists and researchers are available as usual in the “Reader Service” section. Older abstracts can be found on the new Brewlit platform www.genios.de provided by our partner Genios.

The process of submitting articles for publication in BrewingScience has also been revised: Just upload your manuscript via OJS under the menu item “Submission”.

This marks the start of a new phase of BrewingScience – accessible, digital and future-oriented.
