Why the Spaghett signals that the US economy is headed for recession

USA | The Spaghett, a combination of Miller High Life beer and Aperol, signals weaker consumer spending, which could push the economy into a recession, says the website Business Insider (27 July). Also known as the “NASCAR spritz”, or the “trailer park spritz”, it is a way to fancy up your drink without fancying up the price tag too much. Considering that a typical Aperol spritz could cost anywhere between USD 15 and USD 20 in New York City, the cheaper price of the beer version is a big part of the appeal.

Business Insiders refers to data from the payments platform Square which show that orders for Spaghetts in the first half of 2025 are up by 65 percent from last year, and since 2022, Spaghett orders are up by 1,000 percent. The number of Spaghetts showing up on bar receipts has risen over the past five years, per Square's data. Google searches for Spaghetts have spiked this summer.

While Spaghetts are appearing on more drinks menus, they are also easy to make at home. Just crack open a bottle of beer, pour a little out or drink a swig, then put in a half a shot of Aperol. The wedge of lime or lemon pushed into the neck of the bottle is optional.

Miller High Life latches on Spaghett trend

Latching on to the trend, Miller High Life has partnered with ice cream firm Tipsy Scoop and launched the Spaghett-sicle in July. It is a 5 percent ABV push-pop. The frozen treat combines beer, lemon and a spirit-free aperitif. It is available from Tipsy Scoop locations and its online store. A 6-pack retails for USD 79. It beats me why it is so expensive, since a 6-pack of High Life is approximately USD 8.

According to Jacquelyn Caldwell, an associate brand marketing manager for Miller High Life, Spaghett has gained “steady momentum”, especially over the past year. “It started as a bartender favourite in dive bars, mixed directly in the High Life bottle, no frills, just great flavour. From there, it evolved from an under-the-radar pick to a popular choice,” she told Business Insider.

After years of inflation, economic turmoil, and now, tariffs, US consumer feel the pinch. When they do imbibe, many are looking for lower-cost options. The Spaghett is budget-friendly while still a little fun – in other words, the perfect recession drink.
