Dr Tullio Zangrando honoured for his lifetime contribution to brewing
They don’t make them like him anymore: an urbane sophisticated gentleman, conscious of his cultural roots, well-versed in German and Italian and willing to engage himself professionally and voluntarily in brewing. Therefore, it was a well-timed decision by the Italian and German brewmasters’ bodies to honour Dr Zangrando with an honorary membership. Weihenstephan has a lot to thank Dr Zangrando for. For many decades and across many linguistic and cultural boundaries he has proved himself a true ambassador of Weihenstephan’s creed and achievements.
After completing his degree in brewing science and technology at Weihenstephan and after a stint at an English brewery Dr Zangrando went to work for brewer Moretti in Italy in the early 1950s, where he became Technical Director and oversaw the construction of a greenfield brewery project. His spare time he dedicated to the advancement of brewing science and technology in Italy, first by helping to found the Italian Brewmasters’ Association 50 years ago and later by becoming the editor of its journal Birra & Malto in 1975.
Over the years, Dr Zangrando has contributed many articles to BRAUWELT too.
When presented with the honorary memberships, Dr Zangrando responded by saying:
GLI ONORI DI SOLITO SI DANNO
A COLORO CHE MERITI NON HANNO!
Meaning: only those are bestowed an honour who do not deserve it.
Dr Zangrando, we at BRAUWELT International beg to differ!
