Award for Achievement in Technological Research

At the 2018 annual meeting of the Japan Society for Bioscience, Biotechnology, and Agrochemistry (JSBBA), which took place from March 15 to 18, 2018 in Nagoya, Japan, Sapporo received the Award for Achievement in Technological Research. The award was bestowed to Dr. Kiyoshi Takoi, Koichiro Koie, Dr. Yukio Okada and Yukata Itoga.

In Japan, Sapporo has conducted hop breeding for more than 100 years and released several major hop varieties including Japan’s most popular hop variety “Shinshu Wase” and the very characteristic flavor hop variety “Sorachi Ace”. In the 1980s, Sapporo has improved agronomic qualities of Saaz hop in the Czech Republic by the virus-free cultivation technique for plants.

In recent years, researchers of the company have been investigating the mechanism of specific biosynthesis occurring in lupulin glands, the behaviour of hop-derived flavor compounds during fermentation, and the sensory synergistic effects among hop-derived flavour compounds. These researches and their application in new product development achieved by Sapporo were highly evaluated from JSBBA.
