Specialized publisher Hans Carl files for bankruptcy
On July 20, 2026, the specialized publisher Hans Carl filed for bankruptcy with the Nuremberg Local Court. Dr. Harald Schwartz from the law firm Schwartz Insolvenzverwalter, Nuremberg, was appointed as provisional bankruptcy administrator.
The renowned specialized publisher has been owned by the Schmitt and Carl families for over 165 years and currently employs 16 people. “As a publisher focused on a single industry, we are clearly feeling the impact of the current difficult economic situation facing the brewing industry and its suppliers,” says Managing Director Michael Schmitt, a representative of the sixth generation of the family, describing the current situation.
The company publishes the trade journal BRAUWELT in German and English as an e-paper, in print, and via a website that includes an online archive. In addition, the open-access journal BrewingScience is aimed at the scientific community and features articles that undergo a peer-review process. Reference books and podcasts complete the range of information offered.
The focus is now bringing on board a strong investor who will ensure the long-term success of both publications. At the same time, business operations continue without interruption: all online and print editions are being published as usual and continue to offer readers and advertising customers the high quality and reliability they know and expect.
