Elke Arendt is an associate Professor in the Department of Food and Nutritional Sciences, University College Cork since 1993. She lectures and carries out research in the area cereals, malting and brewing science specific focussing on gluten free foods and beverages, starter cultures, functional beverages, rheology and food structure. Arendt’s research programme at UCC, to date, has resulted in over 140 peer-reviewed research papers, 2 books, 30 book chapters, and approximately 400 additional published articles and abstracts. Her current research group comprises of 25 researchers (post docs, PhD students, research scientists).

The former professor at the University of Hohenheim studied Food Technology at TUM, Weihenstephan in the first place. Later he also gained experience in the fields of biosensor, process analysis and process engineering. His diversified experience allows the TUM to set up a broad and comprehensive research programme, on the basis of which in 2008 the scientific board granted a new construction scheme worth EUR 27 million, the iGZW (International Centre for Beverage Science, Weihenstephan). Construction will start in autumn 2009.

Symrise again grew faster than the market in 2008. The EBITDA margin of almost 20% is on a par with the leading companies in the global fragrance and flavour industry. The Company generated a strong operating free cash flow of 9.3% of total sales. In line with the dividend policy of distributing about 50% of basic underlying earnings per share as dividends, the Company will propose a dividend of EUR 0.50 per share at the annual shareholders’ meeting on May 11, 2009.

Stimulant or energy drinks continued to drive the category forward, led by Coca-Cola Enterprises’ Relentless brand, which saw revenues leap by 110% to £ 40 m as it extended into the energy with juice category and expanded distribution. Leading energy drink brand Red Bull added £ 12.5 m in new sales to reach £ 178 m, so Relentless still has some way to go to catch it up, but it has become its most credible rival. With sales up 4% to £ 228 m, the Lucozade range remained overall leader in the sub category.
