Germany to introduce a sugar tax on 1 July 2027
Germany | Consumers will not be pleased. Following the agreement between the coalition partners, the Federal Cabinet introduced a sugar tax bill on 14 October. If parliament approves it, a two-tier model based on sugar content will take effect on 1 July 2027. With this, the federal government is implementing “what associations in the fields of health, science, child protection, and consumer protection have long been calling for,” the Ministry of Finance said. It expects that the new tax will generate approximately EUR 690 million (USD 775 million) in revenue in 2027 and EUR 925 million in 2028.
