Paulaner’s new Oktoberfest tent with underground beer lines

In case you ever wondered how beer supply works in these huge tents which seat over 8000 people each – well, this is what Paulaner has come up with. Its new tent is the first with a central beer supply. Beer is stored in only three tanks (total capacity 840 hl) which feed an underground beer line, which supplies five tapping stations. The circular line is 240 metres long and has a diameter of 10 cm. The pressure is 1.5 bar. The new line allows 15 litres of beer per minute to be served at each of the 11 taps. That’s 9,900 mass beer per hour and hopefully enough to keep thirsty visitors happy during peak times.

The specs say that beer is tapped at 3 degrees Celsius and will reach the tables at 6 degrees Celsius.

The beer line was put underground at 1 metre where it will not be affected by frost. After a thorough rinse it can be used again in a year’s time.

Needless to say Paulaner brewery would not comment on how much it invested in the new tent and beer line.

On another note: it always surprises us what people tend to lose at the Oktoberfest. Until 25 September the authorities found 2,200 items (2009: 1,700), among which were 652 pieces of clothing, 452 passports, 216 wallets, 191 mobile phones, 182 key rings, 180 bags, 166 glasses, 45 cameras, 5 umbrellas,1 dog (female), 1 rabbit and 1 tennis racket.

Why would anybody take a rabbit to the Oktoberfest?
