Asahi says 1.5 million customers' data potentially leaked in cyber-attack
Japan | Japanese brewer Asahi revealed on 27 November that in a massive cyber-attack on its system on 29 September the personal information of more than 1.5 million customers - specifically their names, gender, addresses and contact information - could have been leaked. Data belonging to about 107,000 current and former employees and 168,000 family members of staff were also potentially leaked. Those affected would be notified soon.
Asahi Group Holdings plans to delay its 2025 earnings results beyond a 50-day period following the year's end, to focus on dealing with the fallout of the attack.
The outage resulted in drink shortages in shops across Japan. Asahi accounts for around 40 percent of the country's beer market. The shortage also affected Asahi's soft drinks. Shipments are gradually resuming, the firm said.
Asahi did not state the attacker's identity or demands. The Russia-based ransomware group Qilin, which has previously hacked other major firms, had claimed responsibility for the Asahi attack.
