Concern over ‘super-strength’ RTDs

In recent months, some members of the alcohol industry have raised concerns over RTDs that contain about two standard drinks of alcohol, dubbing them ‘super strength’.

Industry sources say that, while the average RTD (375 mL) contains about 1.5 standard drinks (or around about 5% ABV), producers obviously have a right to cater for different taste profiles by introducing premium category RTDs, containing about two standard drinks ( 6% to 8% ABV), similar to other niche products but still only half the alcohol content of table wine. The Distilled Spirits Industry Council of Australia (DSICA) points out that a balloon glass of red wine equals two standard drinks or more and yet we do not hear complaints about ‘super strength’ wine. Recent additions to the range of premium RTDs include Johnnie Walker Red Label & Cola and Bundaberg Rum & Cola.
