Indians to buy into the OZ wine industry
Tandou Wines is the seventh largest wine producer in Australia with a capacity of three million cases per annum. It sells the Broken Earth and Wontanella brands. The stock-market listed Champagne Indage has a one million cases-winery in Narayangaon, near Nashik, a city in the state of Maharashtra, 185 km away from Mumbai (Bombay).
The deal has been valued at AUD 10 million.
Of late, wine has become popular in India, especially among the upper class. Vijay Mallya’s United Breweries group acquired French winemaker Bouvet-Ladubay for nearly USD 18 million in June 2006 from the US investment company Starwood Capital. This wine company was part of Taittinger’s. India’s United Breweries is partly owned by Scottish & Newcastle.
