Expansion in Asia
Carlsberg Asia has celebrated two of its biggest expansion programs ever, with ceremonies to mark the construction of two new breweries in Dali, China and Bago, Myanmar.
In Dali the company constructs in strategic partnership with the Provincial Government of Yunan, a ten million hectolitre (hl) brewery, emphasizing its position as the market leader in Western China. The new brewery will be meet high environmental requirements and will focus on the minimization of CO2-emissions to ensure a low carbon footprint. The CEO of Carlsberg China, Stepher Maher, says: “The partnership demonstrates our determination and commitment to fostering closer collaboration with our local community. The facility is a stepping stone towards sustainable development in China.”
Meanwhile, a similar ceremony was held in Myanmar to mark the construction of the first international brewery in the country. The brewery will be located on a 54 acre site in Bago, and is expected to employ over 500 people directly, plus providing employment to thousands of other indirectly, as well as greater economic stability in the region. The brewery will be located near a major rice producing area in Myanmar which, according to Daniel Sjogren, MD of Myanmar Carlsberg, will mean access to the highest quality raw materials. He says: “We will have access to good quality water and the famous Bago rice. Other raw materials such as malted barley and hops will be imported according to Carlsberg Group’s high quality global specifications.”
Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen, CEO of Carlsberg Group, comments the expansion: “Asia is an important growth region for the Group and these two new breweries will place Carlsberg Group in the best possible position to capture a significant share of the future growth. China and Myanmar’s breweries will both embrace modern brewing technology whilst placing significant focus on the environmental impact.”
