Duvel Moortgat buys France’s Brasserie du Mont Blanc

France | Duvel Moortgat has taken over the French brewery Brasserie du Mont Blanc. The purchase of the brewery, announced on 18 September, is the latest in a string of international breweries to be added to Duvel Moortgat’s portfolio.

The original Brasserie du Mont Blanc, located in La Motte-Servolex in southeastern France, was founded in 1821, but it ceased operations in 1966. In 1999, Sylvain Chiron, the current owner, decided to revive the brand. Mont Blanc’s beers are brewed using glacier water. In 2022, the brewery that employs 60 people, had an output of 110,000 hl of specialty beers and a turnover of EUR 30 million (USD 32 million).

A long-term investment

Mr Chiron and Michel Moortgat, CEO of Duvel Moortgat, go back a long way. It was Mr Moortgat's uncle who assisted Mr Chiron with the startup more than twenty years ago. The two men stayed in touch and eventually decided to join forces.

“We share the same values and both strongly believe that quality, passion and innovation are the best bases for a successful partnership,” Mr Moortgat said.

No financial details were disclosed. Mr Chiron will remain a shareholder.

Duvel Moortgat is best known as the brewer of Duvel, but it has host of brands in its portfolio. It owns breweries in Europe, the US and China. With the takeover of Brasserie du Mont Blanc, Duvel Moortgat now also controls a brewery in France.
