Munich’s Augustiner Brewery with record output in 2006
That is 40 000 hl more than in the previous year. Augustiner now ranks as Germany’s 14th most popular beer brand.
Augustiner Brewery, which was founded in 1328 and is controlled by a charity, is one of two Munich breweries at the Oktoberfest that is not foreign-owned. The other one is the state-owned Hofbräuhaus. To support its eccentric image, Augustiner is the last brewery to sell its beer at the Oktoberfest out of wooden kegs. Moreover, it continues to package its beer in the now considered old-fashioned Euro-bottle. What nourishes Augustiner’s cult status among Munich consumers is its refraining from any kind of advertising.
