Budweiser brewery in London to be closed
The Stag brewery, which produces an estimated 2 million hl of Budweiser, Bud Ice and Michelob Ultra beers, employs 182 workers and sits on one of the U.K.’s oldest brewery sites.
The decision to close the brewery stems from “synergies” that arise from Belgian brewer InBev’s USD 52 billion buyout of Anheuser-Busch in November 2008.
InBev UK confirmed the closure on 6 January 2009.
Prior to acquiring Anheuser-Busch, InBev pledged to keep open the company’s U.S. breweries.
The U.K. brewery became a wholly owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch in 1997. Before that it was a joint venture between Anheuser-Busch and Scottish Courage.
The site has been used for brewing since 1765 but has been a landmark only since entrepreneurs Charles John Phillips and James Wigan built a brewery there in 1865, according to the Financial Times.
