European Beer Star Competition 2010

The Spoetzl brewery, founded by German immigrants in Texas 101 years ago, won two medals at the European Beer Star competition. Better know as Shiner Beer, the brewery won a gold medal in the German Märzen-style category for its seasonal Oktoberfest and a silver medal for its Shiner 101 Czech-style Pilsner.

What makes Shiner’s brewers particularly proud is that these categories are usually dominated by German and Czech breweries.

Shiner, Texas was founded in the late 1800s by German and Czech immigrants. The Spoetzl Brewery was named after Bavarian brewmaster Kosmos Spoetzl.

Today, the brewery is owned by The Gambrinus Company from nearby San Antonio.

Its best-selling beer is Shiner Bock, but its other products have also received critical acclaim.
