BRAUWELT hosts anniversary party in Nuremberg
This August, Hans Carl Publisher celebrated 150 years of its BRAUWELT publication. While the anniversary issues have already been out, the party was only held in Nuremberg on 8 November 2011 on the eve of Brau Beviale to give advertisers and readers, authors, partners, as well as staff members and members of the owners’ families a chance to attend.
Michael Schmitt, the Executive Publisher of BRAUWELT and BRAUWELT International, said in his opening remarks that he was delighted that over 200 guests had been able to come. Finding a date and a time convenient to all had proven difficult. Only the venue for the anniversary party was a given right from the start: Nuremberg’s old town hall.
Across the street from the town hall is St Sebaldus Church. Johann Carl, who founded BRAUWELT 1861, was a generous sponsor of St Sebaldus Church. His statue can be found against one of the pillars outside the church.
"When we chose this venue we wanted to emphasise our history and our association with it. Without Johann Carl’s abilities and skills as a businessman we would not be celebrating tonight", Mr Schmitt said.
Also present at BRAUWELT’s anniversary party were Johann Carl’s descendants, representing the fifth, sixth and seventh generation.
Planning this event, Mr Schmitt admitted, took some time and a lot of discussions. Finally it was decided not to have long and boring speeches but to let people eat, drink and be merry.
Mr Schmitt thanked Distelhäuser brewery, Weyermann Braumanufaktur and Rittmayer brewery for providing the evening’s beers. Rittmayer brewery was also responsible for the BRAUWELT anniversary beer, an 11 % abv beer, which Mr Schmitt said was as rich in content as the anniversary BRAUWELT issue. According to him, both are suitable for a longer storage or archiving period.
Already last year, BRAUWELT had arranged together with Dr Fritz Schur, President of Bierconvent International, for the “Beer Poster of the Year 2011” awards ceremony to be held in conjunction with BRAUWELT’s anniversary party. But much to Mr Schmitt’s regret, his long-time friend Dr Fritz Schur had fallen seriously ill. He said: “Dear Fritz, in our hearts we are with you and your family.”
That’s why Dr Karl-Ullrich Heyse, Publisher of BRAUWELT and BRAUWELT International and a member of BierConvent International, which is an international society of about 200 beer lovers, took it upon himself to present the awards.
It was the first time the Beer Poster Award was presented. The posters should be outstanding by way of graphics and design. Beer should be portrayed as a traditional and enjoyable beverage, suitable for many occasions, while targeting diverse consumer groups. It should also be portrayed as a beverage of value, made from natural ingredients, which requires lots of tender loving care all the way to the glass
35 breweries had entered 89 posters. They came from six countries, including Mongolia.
An international jury comprised the members of the BierConvent, representatives of national and international associations and organisations, wholesalers and restaurateurs as well as journalists.
Bronze medals were awarded to Germany’s Pott´s Brauerei GmbH, Oelde and to Austria’s "Weiße Weißbierbrauerei" from Salzburg.
The Kölsch brewery Gaffel from Cologne was awarded a silver medal.
The Gold medal went to the Austrian Huber-Bräu, St Johann in Tyrol.
