New Belgium launches Biere de Queer to mark National Coming Out Day

USA | Is this what woke brewers do? After Earth Day (22 April), New Belgium brewery has also added National Coming Out Day (11 October) to its list of release dates. It launched a special beer, appropriately named Biere de Queer – Celebration Ale, which was sent to hundreds of members of Congress to persuade them to pass the Equality Act.

Biere de Queer is a purple hued Belgian-style ale, which is made with apricot, honey and cinnamon, and packaged in 4-pack, 473 ml cans. The beer is available for shipping to select states and is available at its breweries and taprooms in Fort Collins, Colorado, Asheville, North Carolina, and San Francisco, California.

To honour the 33rd anniversary of National Coming Out Day, New Belgium Brewing will be donating USD 1 for every Biere de Queer sold to charities which empower the LGBTQ+ community and allies.

Drink and think

By sending the beer to lawmakers, New Belgium hopes to persuade them to pass the Equality Act. New Belgium argues that 70 percent of Americans support the Equality Act, while Congress has yet to make it a law.

If passed, the Equality Act would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, education, federally funded programmes, credit, and jury service.
